FIGURES
Described below are all the figures used in
the various dances described on this site.
They are only a small sample of the figures that you may come across in
English traditional dance as the dances have been deliberately chosen to limit
the number of figures required.
Promenade Each couple
walks side by side with their partner, anticlockwise round the set. Theoretically they should take their
partners hands in a cross hand hold in front of them, left hand to left hand
and right hand to right hand. If they
can’t manage this then simply holding hands will work just as well.
Swing Each
couple stands facing each other, takes their partner in a two hand hold or a
ballroom hold and spins round clockwise.
With adults I encourage people to use a ballroom hold, but with children
I find a two handed hold works best. If
they cross hands that is ideal, but just holding both hands will work.
A swing works best
if the couple lean very slightly away from each other, put their right foot in
towards their partner and use their left foot to “scoot” round. With a bit of practice they should be able
to go round quite quickly without falling over!!
